Work-Based Learning
Work-based learning (WBL) is a school-coordinated, coherent sequence of workplace experiences that are related to students' career goals and/or interests, are based on instructional preparation, and are performed in partnership with local businesses, industries, or other organizations in the community. WBL enables students to apply classroom instruction in a real-world business or service-oriented work environment.
Tier I - Career Awareness (Most Students)
Career Exploration engages students and businesses in a work-related learning partnership to expose students to local industries, discover career opportunities, and learn employment responsibilities.
Tier II - Career Exploration (Some Students)
Career Exploration experiences encourage students to develop:
· Personal career interests
· A better understanding of pathways to a chosen career
· Workplace readiness skills
Students are better prepared to make informed decisions regarding secondary and postsecondary education and training. These experiences are typically of shorter duration. Students may be assigned supplementary work connected with the activity and may be graded on their performance in a CTE class.
Tier III – Career Preparation (Select Students)
Career Preparation occurs on the job, in a work setting, with options for paid or unpaid work experience. The learning partnership exposes students to local industries, helps them discover career opportunities, and aids in developing employment responsibilities.
